Garden Services in AucklandYour own vegetable garden is rewarding, but may be tedious if you fail to address problems and implement best practices. Site selection and watering are two key components of successful gardening. Know the ideal things to do to grow different vegetables and have a verdant garden just outside your house.

Site Selection

A company that offers garden services in Auckland says that the site selection process is critical to any would-be gardener. The area you plant your vegetables must get at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. Vegetables that receive insufficient sunlight will be unproductive and will provide a fewer harvest.

The location you choose must also have good drainage; areas that accumulate water after rain are unsuitable. To improve water drainage, place plants in raised beds of rows. After the site selection process, choose which vegetables you want to plant; because the available space, amount of sunlight and water may affect its productivity upon harvest.

Watering Best Practices

Overwatering causes problems as much as the lack of sunlight; this may result in produce enlarging too fast and deformed. Follow these best practices to grow a verdant garden that produces yummy fruits and veggies:

  • The ideal time to start watering your garden is just before dawn. Why? This part of the day is too early for bees, which means you won’t create a negative effect on pollination. The next ideal time is in the very early part of the morning. This will give plants ample time to dry before night and absorb the moisture.
  • The amount of water depends on your garden’s needs; certain soils hold moisture longer compared to others. Some areas are hotter and drier, and if you mulch, this practice enables the soil to hold moisture longer, both of which affect the amount of water a plant needs.

These best practices enable you to grow a thriving and verdant garden where you harvest produce for home consumption.
